Foo Fighers is an American rock band, formed in Seattle, Washington in 1994. It was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the dissolution of Nirvana after the death of Kurt Cobain. The group got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as “foo fighters”.

After touring through the spring of 1996, Foo Fighters entered a Seattle studio with producer Gil Norton to record its second album ‘The Colour and the Shape‘. Conflict reportedly erupted between Dave Grohl and original drummer William Goldsmith, eventually causing Goldsmith to leave the band. The band regrouped in Los Angeles and almost completely re-recorded the album with Grohl on drums. Grohl called up Hawkins to recommend a new drummer, and to Grohl’s surprise, Hawkins volunteered himself. He then auditioned for and subsequently joined the band, making his debut in time for the album’s release.

Fun Fact

’The Pretender’ was first called ’New Song’ and then ’Silver Heart’. During a ten-day break from the album recordings in April 2007, Dave Grohl listened to the monitor mixes and thought that the record needed another uptempo song, so he spent his time developing ‘Silver Heart’. The band then got back in the studio and recorded ‘The Pretender’ in 1 day. The song spent a record 18 weeks atop Billboard’s modern-rock singles chart and earned the Foos Grammy nods for Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album & Record of the Year.
