It’s possible I f’d up the first fill there.. but it was pretty damn close. why do people say ‘A for effort’ when effort starts with E?! well, I give myself A for effort, or E, whichever would be the correct way of saying it. I’m Israeli… it’s not my responsibility to know these things.

Tool – Undertow (1993)

Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1990, the group’s line-up includes drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Justin Chancellor has been the band’s bassist since 1995, replacing their original bassist Paul D’Amour. Tool has won three Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries. Due to Tool’s incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today’s music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band’s insistence on privacy.

Undertow is the band’s first studio album. According to Allmusic, Undertow helped heavy metal music and progressive rock remain prominent as a mainstream musical style, and allowed several later bands to break through to the mainstream. It was released at a time when grunge was at the height of its popularity, and pop punk was slowly beginning to gather mainstream attention. AllMusic saw the album’s success in the “striking, haunting visuals that complemented the album’s nihilistic yet wistful mood.”

Fun Fact

Tool’s drummer Danny Carey has laid claim to various drumming techniques that use sacred geometric figures such as the unicursal hexagram. The final product is very recognizable, fluent drumming, although to him it is much more: the official Tool website claims that Danny uses drumming as a ritual similar to occult rituals, with purposes varying from spiritual exploration to “a gateway [which] summoned a daemon he has contained…that has been delivering short parables similar to passages within The Book of Lies”. Another geometric reference from the website was the inclusion of Nothing in This Book Is True… by Bob Frissell on the band’s recommended reading list, a book that deals with sacred geometry and the evolution of human consciousness.
