After many hours of setting up and obsessing about this one, I finally shot the perfect take. while listening to the song on my way home, I realized that I’ve been playin the bass drum pattern wrong! there’s so much reverb on the snare that I couldn’t hear that there’s also a bass drum, so I was playing the bass drum on one and three instead of on all four. Had to make a u-turn and shoot the whole thing again!!! So there u go – Take 2!

Avenged Sevenfold was formed in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California. The band’s current lineup consists of lead vocalist M. Shadows, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Zacky Vengeance, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Synyster Gates, bassist and backing vocalist Johnny Christ, and drummer Brooks Wackerman. M Shadows came up with the name as a reference to the story of Cain and Abel from The Bible, although they are not a religious band. Upon its formation, each member of the band also took on a pseudonym which were already nicknames of theirs from high school.
Nightmare is the band’s fifth studio album. It was produced by Mike Elizondo and mixed in New York City by noted engineer Andy Wallace. Nightmare is the first Avenged Sevenfold record without James “The Rev” Sullivan performing drums on all the songs due to his death in December 2009; however he did write parts that were used for the final recordings, making this the last album he would write on, The Rev’s vocals are still on the album as a tribute to him. This is the only album to feature ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who performed as the drummer for the album in his place, also played with the band for all their tours through the end of 2010, due to his separation with Dream Theater.
Vocalist M. Shadows: “‘Nightmare’ is one of those songs that was the beginning of the record and it was setting us up for this big story. Jimmy loved the lyrics so much that when he passed away, I didn’t want to change them. And I figured, if this record’s gonna be about Jimmy, I’m not gonna change stuff he loved about it, ’cause there’s already so many songs that are about him, or with him in it, and just have to do with that whole dark side of everything we were going through.”
