Tool – Ænima (1996)

Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1990, the group’s line-up includes drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Justin Chancellor has been the band’s bassist since 1995, replacing their original bassist Paul D’Amour. Tool has won three Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

Due to Tool’s incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today’s music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band’s insistence on privacy.

Ænima “ON-ima” is the band’s second studio album. Themes of the album include Egyptian mythology in a seven-pointed star symbolizing Babalon, and sacred geometry in dividing the planet into grids related to chromosomes. The liner notes included references to ketamine produced dissociative anesthesia, Timothy Leary, ritual magick and religious fundamentalism. The band dedicated the album to Bill Hicks (a comedian who the band felt was going in the same direction as them) and said this album to be partly inspired by him. The inside cover displays art featuring a painting of a disabled patient that shows a resemblance to singer Maynard James Keenan and Bill Hicks depicted as a doctor or “healer” with the line, “Another Dead Hero”. Lines from Bill Hicks’ standup set, “One Good Drug Story” and “The War on Drugs” are sampled before the song “Third Eye”.

Fun Fact

Tool’s drummer Danny Carey has laid claim to various drumming techniques that use sacred geometric figures such as the unicursal hexagram. The final product is very recognizable, fluent drumming, although to him it is much more: the official Tool website claims that Danny uses drumming as a ritual similar to occult rituals, with purposes varying from spiritual exploration to “a gateway [which] summoned a daemon he has contained…that has been delivering short parables similar to passages within The Book of Lies”. Another geometric reference from the website was the inclusion of Nothing in This Book Is True… by Bob Frissell on the band’s recommended reading list, a book that deals with sacred geometry and the evolution of human consciousness.
