Red Hot Chili Peppers , also sometimes shortened to The Chili Peppers or abbreviated as RHCP, are an American funk rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The group’s musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. When played live, their music incorporates elements of jam band due to the improvised nature of many of their performances. Currently, the band consists of founding members vocalist Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea, longtime drummer Chad Smith, and former touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the best-selling bands of all time with over 80 million records sold worldwide, have been nominated for sixteen Grammy Awards, of which they have won six, and are the most successful band in alternative rock radio history, currently holding the records for most number-one singles (13), most cumulative weeks at number one (85) and most top-ten songs (25) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. In 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Californication is the band’s seventh studio album. It was produced by Rick Rubin. Much of the album was written in the band members’ homes in the summer of 1998. Kiedis and Frusciante often spent days together discussing song creation, guitar riffs and lyrical content. Bass and percussion aspects of the record were constructed through jam sessions and the individual work of Flea and Smith.
Most of the material and lyrics throughout the songs in the album came from the “personal and professional turmoil” that different members of the band went through/were currently going through at the time. This resulted in the sensitive approach that one might not expect from a band whose followers are skate-punks and fraternity boys. Anthony Kiedis’s main point behind this album was to “tell tales of wondering souls who’ve lost their way searching for the American dream in California”.
One of their early drummers scored the movies ‘Traffic’ and ‘Drive’. During their rocky formative years, Anthony Kiedis and Flea had a hard time keeping permanent members. One of their drummers was Cliff Martinez, who’d go on to compose the soundtracks to movies like ‘Drive.’
