311 is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed in 1988 by vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum, lead guitarist Jim Watson (a member briefly, before being replaced by Tim Mahoney in 1991), bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills, and drummer Chad Sexton. In 1992, Doug “SA” Martinez joined to sing and provide turntables for 311’s later albums, rounding out the current line-up. The band’s name originates from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, Nebraska, after the original guitarist for the band was arrested for streaking.
From Chaos is the band’s sixth studio album. Much of the album was written by the band while on tour in 2000 promoting their fifth studio album Soundsystem. The album name “From Chaos” was inspired by the band’s situation with their previous record label of 7 years, Capricorn Records. According to singer Nick Hexum, they “had a lot of disagreements with Capricorn over the years and it was just time to end our relationship.” The band sued Capricorn, voided their contract and signed with Volcano records. Although the band was going through the stress of legal trouble, they didn’t want to make an album about negativity, so most of the album is about “relationships and appreciating life” according to Hexum, who takes pride in being up-beat and positive.
In 1993, the members of 311 survived a vehicle fire after their RV went up in flames. While driving up a steep incline in Omaha, Nebraska, the RV the band was pulling that carried their gear caught fire. The only door out of the RV was surrounded by flames, so the only way out was for the band to jump through the fire. 311 later wrote about the experience in the song “Omaha Stylee.”
